Ever had one of those days where you do something to
hopefully make someone's day, and the role is reversed, and it becomes even
more to you than you anticipated? That's
exactly what happened to me this past Tuesday afternoon.
After an off-campus visit for work and running a few
errands, I stopped for a sandwich at Wendy's. As I walked into the restaurant, there at the counter stood a frail
older couple placing their order. Waiting
in line directly behind them, I found it quite adorable to listen to their
request. It was exactly what I would
envision my own grandparents ordering. Each
ordered chili, an order of fries to share, and both were delighted that drinks
were free for senior citizens…coffee for the gentleman and lemonade for the
woman.
As they finished ordering, the clerk gave them their total and
I reached out and told her that I wanted to pay for their meal. After a brief moment of surprise, they
introduced themselves as Margaret and Lennie. :) After thanking me, they proceeded to take
their meal to a table. As I was getting
my order, Margaret walked up and asked me if I could join them at their
table. Although my original plan was to
get an order to go, I could not resist the invite!
All I can say is our conversation was P R I C E L E S S! A few tidbits I learned from this precious couple…they’ve been married for 66 years; Margaret had been to
a dr.’s visit for her upcoming open-heart surgery on November 6; and Lennie was
taking physical therapy due to a previous stroke.
And here I was on a late Tuesday afternoon, sitting in Wendy’s enjoying a lovely
conversation with a gracious and kind elderly couple. I know I’ll always think of Margaret and
Lennie whenever I visit Wendy’s again. Absolutely
love it when your day turns out just like this one did. I think I clicked my
heels with glee as I left the restaurant!
